EMT Program FAQ's
The cost of the EMT course is $700. The cost of the Prep Course is $500.
The EMT course includes mastery of several comprehensive concepts of emergency medical care, procedures, and a detailed understanding of tissues, organs, organ systems, and cellular death and pathophysiology. Additionally, we start working very early in the in-person lab sessions on skills, and background information on the context of the skill is needed.
There are three main components of the EMT course - Didactic, skills, and clinical.
Didactic (lecture) - The didactic component of the EMT course is delivered online through a Learning Management System. There are seven (7) Units. Each unit is a separate course in our LMS. Each unit must be completed before moving on to a subsequent unit. Each unit has a capstone written exam. All content is completed asynchronously--there are no required in-person/virtual class sessions.
Skills - The EMT course includes many skills that the EMT student must master before becoming certified. Students will complete in-person skills lab shifts during the EMT course. Typically the course meets twice per week. 100% attendance in these sessions is required.
Clinical - EMT students are required to see real patients during the course. This is achieved through a clinical shift in the Emergency Department/Trauma bay with an EMT Clinical Instructor. The course also requires students to complete at least one ambulance rotation with an area EMS agency.
The Prep Course includes some of the EMT course units and the required BLS/CPR course. This must be completed before starting the EMT Course.
The EMT Course includes additional didactic Units, in-person lab sessions, and the clinical component.
The course is not for credit.
Generally, the colleges within the Virginia Community College System will award comparable credit for an EMT certification. The student must be a bona fide student at these institutions before requesting credit. Typically the course is awarded 8 academic credits.
Although no credit is awarded, students should anticipate a similar workload for an 8-credit college course. The student will need to complete a significant amount of reading and online content during the course, prep and practice skills outside of class, attend in-person sessions, and attend clinical and field shifts.
Unfortunately, the EMT course is a non-credit course. Financial Aid is not available.
Students may apply with the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services for the EMS Scholarship. The link to the website explaining the Scholarship is posted here. Students may contact the office for general information but specific questions should be directed to the Virginia Office of EMS at 1-800-523-6019 (VA Only) or 804-888-9100 (Main Office)
