EMT Program Overview

The VCU CTCCE EMT Program consists of two courses: the EMT Prep Course and the EMT Completion Course. The EMT Prep Course must be completed before enrolling in an EMT Completion Course.  The EMT Prep course offers open enrollment - you can begin and complete the EMT Completion Course at any time, but must be completed before enrolling in an upcoming EMT Completion Course. EMT Completion courses are typically offered during the traditional academic semesters - Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Step 1 - Apply to the EMT Program

Complete the application here.  There is no fee to apply. Be sure to make sure you have all the requirements before applying. VA EMS Regulations do not allow people with certain criminal histories to gain EMS certification. Please review specifics here.

Step 2 - Enroll in the EMT Prep Course

If your application is approved, you will be able to enroll into the EMT Prep Course. The EMT Prep course is online and 100% asynchronous (there is not set times to sign in).  Total time takes about 30 hours to complete. More information about the EMT Prep Course is here.

Step 3 - Enroll in an EMT Completion Course

When the EMT Prep course is completed, you can then enroll for an upcoming EMT Completion Course. These are typically offered during the VCU academic spring, summer, and fall semesters. There are additional online course materials that must be completed before the end of the semester. Additionally, there are in-person lab sessions that meet about 8 hours per week, most often Tuesday and Thursdays evenings from 6:30PM-10PM. (Confirm the start and end dates, as well as meeting days/times on the upcoming course page.)
